Short announcements, voicemails, conversations and radio extracts, from beginner to advanced. Each one has a question in French with four options. At the end you get a score and a rough level.
Practice recordings written for French Exam Alert and read by your device’s computer voice. They are not real exam recordings, and the voice sounds less natural than real speakers.
How it works
Each question plays a short French recording: a station announcement, a voicemail, a conversation or a radio extract. You pick one of four answers, and the questions get harder as you go, from A1 to C1. The real tests are longer: TCF Canada listening is 39 questions in 35 minutes, and TEF Canada listening is 40 questions in 40 minutes.
The recordings are original and read by your browser’s French computer voice, so they sound flatter than real speakers. Choose a voice and a speed (0.8×, 1× or 1.1×), and set plays to 1 (exam mode) if you want more pressure. If your device has no French voice, you can read each transcript instead.
At the end we count up from the easiest level and stop at the first one where you got less than half right. That gives a rough CEFR estimate, which we match approximately to NCLC (B1 ≈ NCLC 5–7, B2 ≈ NCLC 8–9). It isn’t a score: only a TEF Canada or TCF Canada result counts for IRCC. Common questions
No. Every recording and question is original, written for practice and read by a computer voice. It works the same basic way (listen, then pick one of four answers), but it isn’t official exam material.
39 questions in 35 minutes. TEF Canada listening has 40 multiple-choice questions in 40 minutes.
458 out of 699 on TCF Canada, or 249 on TEF Canada (ancien score, out of 360). For the French bonus you need NCLC 7 in all four skills, not just listening.
The audio comes from your device’s text-to-speech. Check that a French voice is installed, turn off silent mode on an iPhone and check the volume. With no French voice, read the transcript and answer the same way.
